Playwell is led by Gary Metcalfe and staffed by a team of experienced sports therapists. All are HCPC or professionally registered, CSP members where applicable, enhanced DBS checked and trained in pitchside immediate care.
Founder & director
Gary Metcalfe
Gary founded Playwell in 2007 to bring high-class sports science and medicine support to athletes at every level, from the recreational to the elite international.
He has more than 25 years in sport. Gary has been first-team physiotherapist at Durham and Hampshire, spent nearly a decade with Somerset, and was Head of Medical at London City Lionesses. Today he is consultant physiotherapist to Cricket Scotland and Head of Sports Science & Medicine at Faversham Town FC.
For nine years he was the ECB's consultant physiotherapist across all disability cricket pathways. He helped set up the pan-disability Lions squad and the Disability Premier League, and is a classifier for disability cricket eligibility. Alongside elite sport he spent ten years in NHS musculoskeletal outpatients, and he has provided Kent County RFU age group cover since 2005.
